What a sweet, sweet… now a triple sweet… ride for Boston sports fans.

The Pats, (well, except this year’s Super Bowl) The Sox… and now, back again in the NBA Finals, The Celtics.

And, a Dream Match-up against the Lakers.

With free-agency, it’s tough to re-create those classic Celtics/Lakers match-ups:

Russel vs. Chamberlin

Havlicek vs. West

Bird vs. Magic

Now, you might credit the Celtics ride to the NBA Finals to the Big Three: KG, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen…

Nope… lean in here ’cause The Marketing Caddy got a little inside scoop on the Celts…

Back in 2003, when the Celtics were struggling to put shots in the hoops and butts in the seats at The Garden, they made a brilliant move. The Celtics hired Rick Gotham (now President of the Celtics) as Executive Director of Sales, Marketing, and Corporate Development.

Now traditional sports marketing thinking figures disappointing ticket sales results from an under-performing team on the court.

Well, Gotham turned that thinking inside out. Marketing’s job, he said, was to help the Celtics win games. Selling tickets would create revenue, revenue would buy players, and players would win championships.

Genius!

Gotham’s message was clear- when you apply focused marketing resources to the core of your business, you position your business for transformation.

(Here’s the full story of Rick Gotham and the Celtics and “Big Thinking in Tough Times…)

Marketing isn’t an expense. It’s an investment that turns a loser into a winner.

Now, as a small business owner, in today’s sketchy economic climate, you might feel like the Celtics of 2003.

Why not ask some of the same questions of your business that Rick Gotham asked with the Celtics…

How can you tap into your rich history, your glory days of a winning heritage?

How can you use marketing innovation, sound, practical strategies, a touch of creativity, relentless promotion, and solid client service that builds valuable relationships to transform your business into a winner?

Maybe my Charger’s can hire Rick Gotham to do a bit of good P.R. for Norv Turner. Norv’s been a great coach thus far but he still gets a bad rap for not being able to beat the Patriots with all of his best offensive players injured :p

    Mike…

Imagine Eagles, Phillies, and Sixers in The Dance in same season? Would that stop Phila Fan from bitching?

    Aaron,

Seems like marketing would buy you more bang for your buck via free agency in BB vs. football… plus cap-a-nomics trickier in football.

While I love marketing, unfortunately marketing cannot help heal the physical injuries to Jake Peavy and Chris Young of my San Diego Padres. The Chargers are the only hope of the San Diego sports fan.
