You have 5 seconds to capture the visitor to your site, especially in a "Stumble" world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. It's all about content. Your readers will not engage your content if the design is too confusing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As Malcolm Gladwell states in &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;blink&lt;/span&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Your readers are "listening with their eyes."&lt;br /&gt;</description>

<p>1. You have 5 seconds to capture the visitor to your site, especially in a &#8220;Stumble&#8221; world.</p>
<p>2. It&#8217;s all about content. Your readers will not engage your content if the design is too confusing.</p>

There are too many sites out there which may look pretty, but when it comes down to actually getting some useful information, or navigating your way around you can often find it difficult and your interest will drop.
Simple design can also be a benefit when optimising your site, John Krycek has written an interesting article on the SEO v Design arguement.
