Just Show Me the Movie!

Today, a brief story from one of my on-line mentors, Dan Lok.

I recently took a flight from Winnipeg, and I noticed
something very interesting.

Several interesting things, in fact.

I don’t travel very often.

But now you can watch these mini-TV’s that are mounted on
the seat in front of you.

Everyone has their own little TV. They’re touch screen.

You can choose your own TV shows, movies, music videos…
just about anything. It’s just like video on demand!

And I thought that was just brilliant!

It reminded me of how important it is to customize your
content. People like things to be personalized.

And you’re gonna have to think how this can be applied to
your marketing.

For example… people want to have customized and
personalized cell phones. (BTW, they’re also willing to
pay extra for that) People want to express their own
personality. They want to express their own unique traits,
thoughts, feelings and styles.

So that’s something to keep in mind with your own markets
and content.

Another interesting thing happened. And it really drove
home something important to ANY business.

I was watching a movie. And the people sitting on either
side of me were also watching movies. But first… let me
tell you a little about what these content providers do.

Before anything starts, you’re shown an advertisement… you
know, a commercial. And the funny thing is that you cannot
fast-forward the commercials!

You are stuck… forced to watch the commercials before the
movie starts. Got it?

Ok…

Well, I noticed BOTH people on either side of me trying in
absolute vain to fast-forward the commercials! They were
getting a little annoyed. But I just watched in amusement
because I knew EXACTLY what was going on.

There they were… poking the heck out of those touch
screens trying to fast-forward!

And of course I looked for a marketing lesson in this.

You know how much we’re all bombarded with marketing
messages every single day?

And when most people see a commercial coming… they
want to skip it! Right?

People automatically ignore it. They want to immediately
discard it.

This is SO second nature behavior to people, now.

I’ve said this many times before…

People HATE to be sold! And people have an ingrained
resistance to just about ANY marketing messages.

So as a marketer, you simple cannot hard-sell people
anymore. You have to make people want to buy. You HAVE to
make them wanna buy without the hard sell.
