“He is extraordinary. If you look at the rankings he is almost two and a half times better than the guy in second place.” Flashy-dressing European Golf Pro, Ian Poulter, commenting in a recent GolfWorld interview that he’s the only guy who can challenge Tiger Woods.
Imagine a “World-Rankings” of Small Business Owners… or a “World-Rankings” of your Small Business segment… auto repair shop, kitchen remodeling, physical therapy, financial planning etc….
And there’s your name, just like Tiger Woods… two and a half times better, based upon your results in head-to-head competition, than the guy in second place.
You have two and a half times more clients… (Tiger:62 PGA wins, 13 Majors; Phil Mickelson(the guy in second):32 PGA wins, 3 Majors)
Career Earnings… Tiger:$94,038,162; Phil:$48,887,892
Now, what makes Tiger “Extraordinary”?
It boils down to a combination of two key traits.
Two traits that Tiger has in abundance.
Two traits that his competitors do NOT share.
1. Strategy
2.Tactics
Chet Holmes, explains the difference between Strategy and Tactics in his book, The Ultimate Sales Machine:
A tactic is a method or technique used to achieve an immediate or short-term gain. You run ads or send direct mail pieces to get leads. You go on a sales call to make a sale. you attend trade shows to meet with potential buyers and get more leads. These are examples of tactics.
A strategy is a carefully defined and detailed plan to achieve a long-term goal. In business, a strategy is the overall impact, the ultimate position you would like to achieve in the market. To think like a brilliant strategist, you will design and combine your tactics with the long-term strategy in mind. In addition, you will constantly ask yourself and your team, “How many strategic objectives can we accomplish with each tactic?”
Chet Holmes experience in working with thousands of business owners is that there are three types of business owners:
1.90% are “tactical”
2.9% are “strategic”
3. Only 1% possess the rare combination of “tactical” and “strategic” abilities.
Tactical + Strategic= EXTRAORDINARY
In golf… and in business.
Let’s look at Tiger’s Strategy.
It’s a combination of two things:
First, Tiger has a Burning Desire. Tiger’s vision, since he’s been a little kid, is to beat Jack Nicklaus’ Career Major Tournament Wins. Period. Unlike nearly every other golf pro, Tiger’s vision and goal is public. Each and every one of his competitors know Tiger’s goal… and… the press writes about it and constantly talks about it.
Have you declared your business vision and goal? Do your competitors know about it? The press? Heck, can you even think of one business anywhere that has done this?
Second, tremendous self-discipline. You gotta pay the price, put in the hard work to play your best. Even if you’re Tiger Woods, there are no short-cuts. Here’s how Tiger describes it:
“It is a very interesting question because it is something you have to find from within. You have to keep pushing yourself from within. It is not about what other people think or say. It is about what you want to accomplish. Do you want to go out there and be prepared to beat everyone you play or face? Then you’ve got to be prepared to put the work in.”
What do you want to accomplish in your business? Are you prepared to beat your competition?
Now, let’s examine Tiger’s Tactics.
What are the methods or techniques Tiger uses to win golf tournaments? What does he do on the course that puts him in a different league all his own from other PGA golf pros?
Now, if you’ve ever been to a PGA tournament, or had the opportunity to actually play a round of golf with a PGA pro, you’ll quickly realize that all these guys play a vastly different game than the rest of us. As the commercial says: “These guys are good… all of ‘em.”
All these guys can hit shots, scramble if they miss the green, drain putts.
But, Tiger has an edge. A tactical advantage.
While Tiger doesn’t lead the PGA Tour in any of these individual tactical areas, it’s the combination of them… and his rare combination of both tactical and strategic golfing abilities that make him “Extraordinary”.
1. Tiger is among the leaders in driving distance.(T12 in 2007)
2. Tiger is among the leaders in Greens in Regulation (T4 in 2007)
3. Tiger is among the leaders in fewest putts per Greens in Regulation (actually, he did lead this stat in 2007)
Here’s the thing,
Tiger’s ability to bomb drives, hit greens, and drain putts is a result of his hard-work, his discipline.
Remember, discipline is part of Tiger’s strategic approach.
Tiger works out. He works on his swing. He practices his putting technique.
Also, his mental discipline and confidence are unmatched. Tiger hates three-putt greens… even when he’s leading a tournament by a dozen strokes.
Again…
Strategic + Tactical= EXTRAORDINARY
When you combine strategic thinking and planning, with sound tactics that compliment your strategies, your business is positioned for EXTRAORDINARY growth and accomplishment.
But, just like Tiger, you gotta put in the hard work and pay the price.
When faced with a putt to win… or a sale to close…
Your vision, discipline, mental toughness, and confidence… along with a solid stroke, or a sound closing line… will have you hoisting trophies.
Like Tiger.

Great post Walt. So, if I do all this, how long will it take me to make $94,038,162 then?

And a great question Catherine…
I believe it’s first starts with “being” rather than “doing”.
Just like Tiger, in your head, you gotta Be the Best Golfer Ever. Have a crystal-clear Vision of Doing it as if it’s happening.
And, while we all love cold-hard cash, realize that if the Vision is only dollar signs, it’s gonna take a long, long, time.
Finally, work harder and smarter than every one else.
Lots of us understand the hard work part. Few DO it. Why? Lack of discipline fueled red-hot with a burning desire.
Smarter in almost every case means getting help from someone who’s better than you in your weak areas, or has crucial knowledge or insights from experience that can help you from wasting time working hard on all the stuff that just doesn’t matter.
$94,038,162?
It’s only a number…
Think BIG!
BE a Tiger! (Hey, didn’t some ad guy already use that one?)
