I’m a voracious reader. I’ve read lots ever since I’ve been a kid. Yeah, I watch some TV, but most of it I find dull, boring, and superficial.

Ryan Healy posted his top 12 most life-changing books. Ryan tracks all the books he reads and keeps a written history. I’m not that disciplined about my reading habits. I just read.

Let’s look at some of Ryan and his readers’ life-changing reads…

And, offer you a couple of my own.

Ok… from Ryan’s list, I would include:

The Bible— I agree with Keith Goodrum, If I were stranded on a desert island, the one book I would want is The Bible. Every time I read passages, I grow in understanding myself, my relationship to others, and most importantly, my relationship to God.

Purple Cow… or… Permisssion Marketing?— All of Seth’s books get me thinking. They’re all brilliant in their simplicity. I enjoy Seth’s outlook because he has a big picture viewpoint with common sense spin.

Moving on to Jennifer Gibbs’ list in the comments:

The Richest Man in Babylon— Profound in it’s basic truths about how money works. Also, a great example of story-telling.

From Jim Sansi’s previously posted list:

The 4-Hour Work Week— The Tim Ferriss “Throw- Down”. Stop defining yourself with your work. Live a life that defines who you are.

Kevin Dawson cited a couple gems including…

Atlas Shrugged—the most inspirational business book I’ve ever read.

“Two things were impossible to him: To stand still or to move aimlessly.”

Chad at Advice Network chimed in …

How to Win Friends and Influence People— One of those books you wear out reading over and over because you’re at a different level of understanding when you re-read it. With all the emerging social media and marketing buzz, it’s probably more relevant than ever.

Mike Johnson at simplebizengine had this winner…

Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B. Cialdini— a bit technical, but a real eye-opener for marketers about how things are really sold.

Joseph Ratliff at The Profitable Business Edge…

Dan Kennedy’s No BS Books— Couldn’t agree more. Dan dishes up the best common-sense, straight-talking marketing advice.

Ok… here’s a couple of my life-changers:

Think and Grow Rich —The word was out long before The Secret and all this recent Law of Attraction hype.

The Road Less Traveled — I remember studying this book in a church group nearly 30 years ago when Dr. M. Scott Peck’s book was first published. His views of love, spiritual growth, and relationships are timeless.

The Old Man and the Sea— the classic study of man’s struggle against himself and his world. Hemingway’s concise writing and vivid imagery is truly amazing.

Golf in the Kingdom — As John Updike, fellow Pennsylvanian and golf fanatic, writes:

“Golf is of games the most mystical, the least earthbound, the one wherein the walls between us and the supernatural are rubbed thinnest. There is much wit and good will in Golf in the Kingdom.”

Golf in the Kingdom takes you to those places where mind-body-spirit blend into a new level of human imagination and potential.

I know I’m missing so many good reads that have influenced my thinking, my life, and my business. Abraham Lincoln’s and Ben Franklin’s auto-biographies, Michael Gerber’s The E-Myth and E-Myth Mastery, Deepak Chopra’s stuff, and more recently, Malcom Gladwell’s blink and The Tipping Point.

And, my Amazon Wish List grows every day.

Now… How about your Life-Changing Books?

Just as Ryan suggested, go ahead and share your list in a post on your blog.

Link back to this post, and yep, I’ll link right back to you.

As Ryan suggests, shoot me an email: walt(at) make-your-marketing-work(dot)com to make sure I don’t miss your list.

I’m eager to learn what shapes your life.

http://flickr.com/people/angellic/

… and a social marketing P.S. Tip.

Two once high-flying companies you can now toss away as junk because they ignored marketing fundamentals:

The Sharper Image and Lillian Vernon

Why?

Well, Denny Hatch at Target Marketing claims they both” launched businesses without paying their dues… and, ultimately, neither of them knew what the hell they were doing.”

So, in a nutshell, where did these two blow it?

1. They focused all their marketing efforts on chasing new customers. (you know I like “clients”) Both Sharper Image and Lillian Vernon failed to leverage relationships with their first-time buyers. They had no strategy to up-sell, cross-sell, and offer incentives for additional purchases. Basically, they took the money and ran.

2. Always protect your USP. (Unique Selling Proposition) Sometimes competition will force you to innovate your USP. Never get lazy or take your USP for granted.

3. If you build a great business, make sure you have someone to continue your legacy. Bill Gates has Steve Balmer.

P.S.— Don’t expect Social Marketing to fix these basic marketing flaws. Take a look at “What Social Media Is Not”

“The big bucks spent on traditional advertising and PR, online and offline, are nowhere near as likely to influence sales and reputation as what friends, family and coworkers say about something you are considering buying.”

Humm… maybe social marketing could save Sharper Image or Lillian Vernon?

Not likely, they were too caught up in the traditional advertising chase for new clients. A fundamental fatal marketing flaw.

Seems to me that the key today is open communication, and your responsiveness to your communications with your prospects and clients…

In other words, stop interrupting them with your advertising and listen to what they want.

Sounds simple. Perhaps not easy.

Now, let me ask you a question:

“What’s your biggest challenge in using social media to build relationships with your clients?”

” For all the poor bastards who couldn’t afford SMARTS, Social Power Linking is waiting with open arms and far more affordable.” Jack Humphrey declared recently inside the Social Power Linking forum.

It’s that kind of blunt honesty… and Jack’s hands-on involvement in this program that Social Power Linking makes the $29.95 monthly admission a “no-freaken’-brainer” marketing decision for serious Internet Marketers.

“If you own a website, you need Social Power Linking. Period.” Jack states, again bluntly. (Gotta love this No B.S. Approach…)

But, don’t take Jack’s word for it. (As he states, “You can’t trust me, I know…”)

What’s everyone else saying about SLP?

“At a dollar a day this should be in range of any marketer who is serious about knowing the latest in traffic generation and marketing.

The Sly Marketer, Jens Berget, is excited:

” You might say that I am a little excited, but that’s because I am. To me, this is what Internet marketing is all about, finding a course that provides you with the latest marketing tactics, so I don’t I have to spend days or weeks surfing the web looking for new and creative ways to promote. Web 2.0 is such a great way to drive traffic to any site, and now I think that I found what I have been looking for.”

“Like Seth Godin, Jack Humphrey has been telling Marketers they need to adapt and change their marketing methods for years now with Social Power Linking. Jack saw this “coup d’ etat” coming before most and began joining in with the “conversations” while most of us were still doing our marketing basically the same way as the “evil Marketers” of past (and current) - cramming and forcing our message down our visitors throats.”

Ladies… For that Internet Marketing Guy in Your Life

“I’m suggesting Jacks new course Social Power Linking as a fine gift for a man who runs a website. What better gift could you give him than a gift that helps him achieve the success he wants from his website, fast.

After all, a gift that helps him succeed at what is probably his dream, would be about as good a gift as you could give him.”

Yes, Even Geeks Need the Link Love of Social Power Linking…

“I’m suspicious of anyone showing up in my social circle and immediately hawking something, even if it’s exactly what I need. I can’t tell you how many times I saw the community cut off its nose to spite its face just to get back at a marketing type guy who was not even spamming and gaming the system, but just trying to let folks know about a resource and get paid for it at the same time. It’s not that there was anything wrong with getting paid, but HOW you did it made all the difference and that lesson was frequently all too subtle for most to pick up.

So why the history lesson? I’m happy to say that as a geek who usually wants nothing to do with marketing in a traditional sense, I’m thrilled to say that Jack Humphrey is a breath of fresh air in a world where almost everything is flimflam with a fresh coat of paint and a desperate glad-handing handshake.

I joined the Social Power Linking program the day it launched and have already started to see wonderful results. Jack Humphrey speaks to my geek side as well as my side that wants to do marketing in a different and more transparent, honest way. Social Power Linking has been around for a while, quietly building a loyal following. They don’t have to scream it on the mountaintop and, in fact, I’m glad they don’t; it’s why I’m glad to be a part of it.”

David Lee Venters chimes in with:

“The Social Power Linking site is amazing, its full of reports on how to dominate Squidoo, and other web 2.0 properties as well as an explanation on how to get to the front page of Digg.

… but what holds the biggest bonus for me is the forum, this is a forum where everyone who has become a member will help everyone else with their web 2.0 projects.”

Internet Relationship Marketing Expert, Tony Zayas recommends SLP:

“If you’d like to tap into the hundreds of millions of potential prospects you have access through via the Internet, I’d recommend Jack Humphrey’s Social Powerlinking course to start.
Why a 60 day jump start? To keep you to a schedule. Often internet marketers suffer from information overload.
Even in Iceland, Link Love is Hot…

“The 60 Day Marketing Plan is heavy duty stuff. Trust me, your head will be spinning after reading this. But, this isn’t just a guide. It’s an actual blueprint for building massive traffic. In fact, it’s the same plan which Jack’s staff use for clients who pay up to $50,000 a year for his services. You’ll see that as you read the plan - it’s an internal set of instructions for his staff. This is powerful stuff. Mind you, there is a LOT of work involved with implementing this plan (which is why Jack has staff to do it), but even if you just use a fraction of this stuff it will be effective. This is no GRQ (get rich quick) plan or a “lazyman’s” guide. It requires real commitment. After all, you’re running a “real” business, aren’t you?”

For You Spanish Speakers…

“Además de este libro, Jack Humphrey ha comenzado un sitio de suscripción mensual a 29 dólares por mes, en el que se avanza un paso más en los temas tratados en su libro, incluyendo por ejemplo una guia detallada de los pasos a seguir en 60 dias (que hacer dia por dia) para obtener trafico para tu sitio web o negocio en niveles extraordinarios.”

And…

Last, but not least…

Is it a good way to gain readership?” Brian LeBars from Green Mortgage Group asked the other day.

Brian, the simple answer is “Yes.”

MyBlogLog is #8 out of 75 traffic tactics you’ll discover here at SuperBloggingTips:

“Use MyBlogLog. Make sure you have an eye-catching avatar. Then join all the MyBlogLog communities you can (daily limit of 15). In no time your avatar will be all over all the MyBlogLog blog and community pages, and you’ll see more and more visitors coming to you.”

Jack Humphrey shares hundreds of blog marketing tactics in his excellent resource, Authority Black Book.

(Bonus: here’s Jack’s take on MyBloglog)

Yep, Brian, time spent using MyBlogLog will gain you readers, but you want more than readers now, don’t ‘cha?

Notice that the SuperBloggingTips traffic tactics list starts and ends with:

Number 1: Create Great Content.

Number 75: Be Yourself.

It all starts with creating great content. Content that your solves the problems of your targeted readers. A solid foundation of marketing strategy helps you create great content. Roll up your sleeves, dig in and do in-depth market research. What keeps your target readers… your potential Ideal Clients… tossing and turning, waking up in a cold sweat at night? What gets their blood absolutely boiling? What do they dream about?

For example, one thing that would fry my ass as a “green” mortgage prospect is:

“Why in the hell do they have to kill so many damn trees to process my mortgage?”

And always…

Be Yourself.

Each and every one of us possess a unique combination of talents, strengths, experiences, and insights that not another soul on Earth has… past, present, or future.

The challenge for all of us is to discover who we are and boldly share it. In this sharing, we serve and help each other.

So, here’s the thing:

Yep, MyBlogLog is one (of hundreds) marketing tactic that will result in readers. But, you convert readers into paying clients when you convince them that you deeply understand their dreams, desires, and are uniquely qualified to help them solve their problems and achieve their hearts’ desires.
